More Support for Rail Service
19 October 2019 – Cape Breton Post
Thank you to the Scotia Rail Development Society (SRDS) and specially to Jim Guy and Mary MacPherson, for bringing the issue of rail to the forefront in this election (“An open letter about rail in Cape Breton”, Cape Breton Post, October 15)
Firstly, we want to commend our island for the service and volunteerism we see in our two ridings, as groups such as these take on the role of advocacy and service to our communities.
Rail is critical to the NDPs climate plan and consistent with our commitment to support economic development in all Canadian communities, both rural and urban. New Democrats support the restoration of rail service in Cape Breton and we will come to the table with a federal financial contribution. The question we have is whether the provincial government is willing to step forward and be a partner in the restoration of rail. New Democrat MPs can be counted on to fight for funding to fight for the restoration of rail on our island.
In terms of other specific infrastructure in Cape Breton, we've committed to public transit, broadband internet and, now, rail.
